Dog-to-Dog Introductions

Module 4 6 min read

Bad dog introductions cause most dog-dog aggression problems. A controlled, calm introduction sets the tone for the entire relationship.

The Parallel Walk Method

This is the safest way to introduce two dogs:

  1. Both dogs on leash, one handler each. Start 20+ feet apart, walking in the same direction.
  2. Walk parallel for 5-10 minutes. Reward calm behavior with treats.
  3. Gradually decrease the distance between dogs if both are relaxed.
  4. When they can walk side-by-side calmly, allow brief butt-sniffing (3 seconds max).
  5. Call them away and reward. Repeat.
  6. Only allow free interaction in a fenced area once both dogs are calm and showing relaxed body language.

Red Flags During Introductions

  • Stiff body, hard stare, raised hackles → increase distance immediately
  • One dog pinning the other repeatedly → separate and try again another day
  • T-posing (standing over the other dog's shoulders) → redirect before it escalates
  • Intense fixation on the other dog → too close, needs more parallel walking
Never: Never introduce dogs face-to-face on tight leashes. Leash tension creates reactivity. The parallel walk prevents this by keeping both dogs moving and relaxed.
